German Far-Right Dictating the Political Agenda, Study Finds

Mainstream parties in power are more and more enabling the radical right to set the public discourse, as per a recent research carried out in Germany.

Researchers discovered that this phenomenon has inadvertently helped far-right parties by validating their viewpoints and disseminating them more widely.

Analysis Based on Over 20 Years of Media Reporting

The results, released in the European Journal of Political Research, utilized an automated text analysis of more than 520,000 articles from a half-dozen national newspapers.

Capital-based scholars observed that as the radical faction moved from fringe issues in the late 1990s to central themes like integration and immigration, mainstream parties increasingly adjusted their communication in reaction.

This adjustment boosted the spread of these concepts and signaled to voters that such stances were acceptable.

Consequences for Democratic Systems

"Public communication by established political groups plays a central role in the voting performance of the far right," explained a political sociologist involved in the study.

"This element has been overlooked," she added.

The effect was evident even when mainstream groups were condemning the radical faction. "They still receive focus," the expert remarked. "The main point is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this attention is crucial."

Mainstreaming Phenomenon Throughout Europe

While the research was focused on Germany, this mainstreaming phenomenon is likely to apply to nations throughout the European continent.

"You see this a lot in European news outlets," said another researcher. "Radical groups makes a statement and everyone begins discussing it for one week."

"Although you're opposing it, you're repeating it," he stated.

Toughening of Public Rhetoric

At times, leaders have also toughened their language to align with that of the far right.

In a recent discussion, a then national leader advocated large-scale deportations and urged them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."

Similar instances can be found across the continent, as elected officials from countries ranging from the UK to France embrace the rhetoric of the far right, especially on immigration.

This has created an echo chamber that was unthinkable a ten years prior.

Central Issue: Who Sets the Agenda?

"{If you're a centrist political group and you are discussing societal topics – migration, assimilation – in a way that is dictated by the pace of the far right, that's the essence of agenda setting," explained a researcher.

Some political parties have taken additional measures, attempting to emulate the hardline agenda of the far right, even as studies suggests that doing so leads the electorate to vote for the far right.

Gradual Influence and Public Perception

The scope of data collected showed that the influence of radical groups had been progressive and had increased with the passage of time.

"Voter awareness doesn't change from one day to another," stated a co-author. "However, when you hear this negative framing around immigration every second week, and it is being spread not only by far-right parties but also, for instance, by established parties, then of course this narrative gains more traction."

Need for Established Groups to Develop Their Own Discourses

The research emphasized the necessity for mainstream political parties to develop their own discourses, especially on subjects such as migration and assimilation, rather than constantly trailing after the radical right.

"It resembles a choreography," explained one author. "When the leader is radical and you're responding to them, you lose the ability to choose which tune should be heard."
