Caelan Doris Included in Irish Squad While McCarthy Left Out
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall internationals, however lock McCarthy misses out.
Doris, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are not included because of injury, while number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation following the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities states uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".
After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team will play Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented the coach, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected as Farrell opting against calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of midfield choices. Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
McCarthy is the sole new name in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and played in Ireland A's defeat by the English in Bristol earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.
Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to the US on the following day.
